CALABAR- A 22 years old girl named Odama Mary Agado at the weekend took her own life by swallowing a substance suspected to be snipper after she caught her boyfriend with another girl.
The girl who is from Woleche-Ipuole in Yahe ward , Yala Local Government Area in northern Cross River was until the incident resident in Enugu ,the capital of Enugu State where she operated a hair dressing salon.
According to a source from the area who gave his name as Daniel, the girl was “doing well in her hair dressing business and decided to buy a car for her boyfriend and also rented an apartment for him but somehow, the boyfriend got involved with another girl. When Mary went to visit the boy and to stay the weekend with him on Friday, she found him with another girl in the apartment she rented and she became furious”.
The girl who became distraught and angry over the boyfriend’s action returned to her own apartment. “When Mary got to her own house, she called her mother and narrated what happened to her and told her whatever she saw ,she should take it that way that she won’t live again- meaning she was about taking her own life”. He said , however the mother to the girl did not take immediate action by calling the girl back to warn against taking any rash action or raising alarm to get people to call her but kept silent on the excuse that there was no credit on her phone at that time.
“Rather than the mother raising alarm since she couldn’t call her back, she kept quiet and a few hours later she got a call that Mary drank snipper and had been rushed to the hospital”.
Daniel said efforts by doctors to save her life could not succeed and she died on Friday evening and her body taken to the village where she was buried on Saturday.
“Immediately the body arrived on Saturday, we dug a grave and buried her because she was too young to be kept for customary burial ceremony”.
According to him, there was no need to report to the police since she reportedly took the snipper on her own. “We are at a loss why she should take such action over a boyfriend. Some people say she was spiritually manipulated. Whatever it was no blame game will bring her back”
