Abdulrahman, Anyanwu Cleared To Lead PDP Ahead Of Sunday Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) moved closer to a major leadership transition on Monday as the screening subcommittee officially cleared Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu to retain their positions as National Chairman and National Secretary.

The duo emerged as the sole candidates for the party’s top executive roles following a high-stakes screening exercise conducted by the faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The atmosphere in Wuse, Abuja, was electric as a massive crowd of party faithful, decked in the PDP’s traditional colours, gathered to show solidarity.

The screening serves as the final procedural hurdle before the National Convention scheduled for this Sunday.

This convention is seen as a pivotal moment for the party to reorganise after a Court of Appeal judgement nullified the 2025 Ibadan Convention, throwing the party’s previous leadership structure into legal limbo.

Beyond the top two offices, the committee also gave the green light to several other key incumbents to run unopposed.

They include Hon. Umar Bature for National Organising Secretary, Ajibade Kamaldeen as National Legal Officer, Ambassador Ibrahim Bala for Youth Leader, Prof. Ogunshe Adenike for National Women Leader, and Jungudo Haruna Mohammed for National Publicity Officer, our correspondent reports.

Rt Hon. Kingsley Chinda, Chairman of the 2026 National Convention Screening Sub-committee, addressed 20 of the 22 aspirants, noting that the lack of challengers for the top spots reflects a “huge vote of confidence”.

He remarked that the unopposed leaders have provided a steady hand during periods of internal turbulence and successfully steered the party through recent crises.

Despite the absence of competition for these specific seats, Chinda emphasised that the committee would not skip any due diligence, assuring party members that every relevant document would be meticulously verified to maintain the integrity of the process.

He reiterated a commitment to the principles of justice, equity, and openness as the party prepares for its most significant gathering of the year.

The screening exercise will continue this Friday as the party enters its final countdown to the Sunday convention.

The outcome is expected to define the PDP’s trajectory as it seeks to position itself as a formidable opposition and prepare for the 2027 general elections, our correspondent reports.
