The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Education, Dr Donatus Chukwuma Ilang, has urged individuals, religious bodies and community leaders to refrain from encroaching on government school lands.
Dr Ilang appealed while addressing the management of Station Urban Primary School and members of St Peter’s Presbyterian Church, Kpirikpiri, Abakaliki, over an alleged land dispute.
He called on both parties to remain calm and avoid further escalation of the boundary issue.
He stated that the government would ensure a thorough review of all relevant documents to establish proper demarcation. According to him, many conflicts arise from land encroachment without valid documentation or approved surveys.
He added that misunderstandings and competing interests have contributed to recurring disputes in the state.
The Commissioner assured both parties that no effort would be spared in resolving the matter fairly. He encouraged them to see themselves as partners contributing to the development of society through education and moral guidance.
Earlier, the Chairman of the School Land Encroachment Committee, Hon. Peter Nwogbaga, who provided insight from a previous visit to the disputed area, also advised restraint and dialogue.
In response, the legal adviser to St Peter’s Presbyterian Church, Brendan Agu, commended the commissioner for his prompt intervention and pledged the church’s commitment to peace.
Similarly, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs Ajah Agnes, alongside Mrs Onwumere Philomena, expressed appreciation for the swift response, noting that ongoing activities on the disputed land could pose risks to pupils’ safety.
