The Mandate Secretary, FCT Area Council Services Secretariat, Hon. Bitrus Lawrence Garki, on Monday, officially resigned from office.
In a statement he personally signed, Garki said the decision came after a deep and careful reflection, which aligns with his commitment to serve the people of the Federal Capital Territory.
“I, Hon. Bitrus Lawrence Garki, hereby formally announce my resignation from office as Mandate Secretary (Commissioner), FCT Area Council Services Secretariat.
“This decision comes after deep reflection and in alignment with my continued commitment to serve the people of the Federal Capital Territory with even greater dedication and purpose.”
While commending President Bola Tinubu, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, his colleagues and the people of the FCT, he said that it was a rare privilege to have served the public.
“I remain profoundly grateful to President Bola Tinubu and my boss and father, the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, for the opportunity to serve, as well as to my colleagues, stakeholders, and the good people of the FCT for their support, cooperation, and trust throughout my tenure.
“My 931 days serving in this capacity have been an honour and a privilege. Together, we have made meaningful strides in strengthening the FCT traditional institution, promoting grassroots governance, improving service delivery across the Area Councils, and contributing to the realisation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“As I step into the next phase of my journey, I do so with renewed resolve to contribute even more to the progress, unity, and development of our dear FCT.” He said
Garki’s resignation may not be unconnected with the presidential directive for all the political appointees seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign their appointments on or before March 31, 2026.
Those affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers to the president, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, and chief executive officers of federal government parastatals, agencies, commissions and government-owned companies, as well as other political appointees of the president.
The directive, announced in a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries ahead of the 2027 polls.
The circular, signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Ibrahim Kana, stated that the directive applies to all categories of presidential political appointees seeking to participate in party primaries or contest for any elective office.
