Jos – The Jos Electricity Distribution Plc (JED Plc) has commenced the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP) Metering Scheme, a Federal Government-backed initiative designed to improve electricity service delivery and address the longstanding metering gap across its franchise States of Bauchi, Benue, Gombe, and Plateau.
The programme, which begins with a pilot phase in Plateau State, will see the deployment of 109,000 prepaid meters free of charge to customers connected to Band A feeders.
According to the company, the exercise is strictly targeted at existing unmetered customers and the replacement of faulty meters within Band A feeders. New service connections, however, will continue to be processed under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme.
Emphasizing that the new meters come at no cost to customers, JED Plc warned against illicit payments to staff or agents during the rollout.
“The DISREP meters are completely free. Customers are strongly advised not to make any payments for meters or installations. Any customer who does so acts at their own risk, as the company will not be liable for any losses,” the the Acting Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mammanlafia Umar said.
The company further urged customers to promptly report any fraudulent activities with supporting evidence through its official communication channels.
The advanced prepaid meters under the scheme are equipped with modern technology designed to boost transparency, efficiency, and customer confidence. Features include automated token uploads, geo-lock functionality tied to JED Plc’s database, real-time consumption monitoring with alerts, and tamper detection with instant notifications to the company.
Each installation will also come with a complete kit comprising the meter, a User Interface Unit (UIU), and a meter card.
Speaking on regulatory compliance, Umar stated that customers benefiting from the scheme are expected to validate their financial standing with the company. “All customers benefiting from the DISREP Metering Scheme are required to visit the nearest JED Plc office after installation to validate their debt profile,” Umar explained.
He added that such customers would also qualify for incentives under the company’s ongoing Debt Validation and Discount Promo, which provides a 30 percent discount for those who clear their total outstanding debt in full, and a 25 percent discount for customers opting for installment repayment within three years.
JED Plc appealed for cooperation from customers during the exercise. “We urge all customers, particularly those on Band A feeders, to cooperate fully with our staff during meter validation and profiling visits,” the management noted.
The company assured that regular updates on the DISREP Metering Scheme would be provided through its official channels, while customers with complaints or inquiries are encouraged to visit any JED Plc Customer Care Centre for assistance.
