The Kaduna State Assembly on Tuesday referred a bill to establish the College of Post-Basic Nursing Sciences, Rigasa, to the relevant committee for in-depth study and presentation of the report.
The bill, contained in a communication from Gov. Uba Sani, was referred for in-depth study by the Deputy Speaker, Henry Magaji, who presided over the plenary.
Similarly, a member representing Juma’a Constituency, Ali Kalat, presented a motion on the need for independence of the multi-campus College of Nursing and Midwifery in the state.
The motion, which was co-sponsored by 15 other lawmakers, sought to grant full independence to the various campuses of the State College of Nursing and Midwifery.
Presenting the motion, Kalat recalled that the multi-campus structure was established by the Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery Law of 2018.
According to him, the law repealed previous laws governing the individual schools in Kafanchan (1999) and Tudun Wada, Kaduna (2014) to merge them into a single institution with branches in Tudun Wada, Kafanchan, and Pambegwa.
He noted that the merger had triggered severe operational bottlenecks, citing complexities in effective management, challenges in maintaining consistent educational quality, and difficulties in unified decision-making.
Other issues highlighted include logistical hurdles, inequitable resource distribution affecting school projects, technological barriers in teaching, high operational costs, and poor coordination that prevents the campuses from maintaining a unified academic calendar.
To address these challenges, the members passed a motion urging the Kaduna State Government to enact legislation providing for the administrative independence of the individual campuses.
Kalat noted that independent management would foster healthy competition, boost internally generated revenue, and improve healthcare delivery in line with the transformation agenda of the Uba Sani administration.
