Kalu Urges PR Practitioners to Prioritise Transparency

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on public relations practitioners to move beyond image polishing and embrace candid, issue-based engagement with citizens, stressing that transparency is now central to governance and public trust.

Kalu spoke on Thursday at the Nigeria Public Relations Week 2026 held in Kaduna, where he was also conferred with the Honorary Fellowship of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (FINPR)

He emphasised that modern public relations must evolve from mere dissemination of information to a system that actively listens to the people and reflects their priorities in governance.

He explained that effective communication must begin with a deliberate needs-analysis framework that helps leaders understand citizens’ concerns and identify practical solutions.

According to him, public relations must not end at messaging but should include feedback and appraisal mechanisms that allow citizens to assess government performance and contribute meaningfully to policy development.

“Public relations shouldn’t just focus on creating a polished image; it should also involve candid discussions that address real issues, ensuring a more transparent and authentic connection with the citizens,” he said.

Kalu warned that growing global distrust in institutions underscores the urgency of credible, honest communication, noting that misinformation and division continue to threaten democratic stability.

Citing the 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer, he said more than 61 per cent of citizens worldwide express moderate to high grievance toward institutions, a trend he described as dangerous if not addressed through transparency and accountability.

He maintained that a nation’s strength lies not only in its resources or policies but also in the level of trust citizens have in their leaders and institutions.

The Deputy Speaker commended the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations for its role in promoting professionalism, ethical communication, and reputation management across the country.

He also lauded President Bola Tinubu for projecting Nigeria’s image internationally through strategic engagements, including his recent visit to the United Kingdom, which he said highlighted the importance of public relations in diplomacy.

-centred Kalu expressed appreciation to the NIPR for conferring the fellowship on him, noting that the recognition would inspire him to deepen his commitment to transparent governance and people-centred leadership.
