Kebbi Governor Appoints Provost for Midwifery College

Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has approved the appointment of Muhammad Musa as the pioneer Provost of the newly established Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Science, Ambursa, in a move aimed at strengthening healthcare training and improving maternal health services in the state.

Journalists were given access to a letter signed on Thursday by Dr. Suwaiba Salihu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, announcing the appointment.

The letter stated that the appointment was made solely based on merit.

Salihu urged Musa to justify the trust placed in him while congratulating him on his merited appointment.

“I am happy to notify you that your appointment as Provost of Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Science, Ambursa, has been approved by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris,” the letter said.

She also urged the new provost to carry out his responsibilities with commitment, diligence, and dedication, pointing out that strong leadership during the institution’s early stages would be crucial to its success.

The Idris administration’s larger initiative to increase access to high-quality healthcare education, fill labour shortages in the medical field, and enhance maternal and child health outcomes throughout Kebbi State includes the creation of the College of Midwifery Science.

The appointment takes immediate effect.

It was reported earlier that Kebbi State continues to face difficulties in providing healthcare for mothers and children, including a lack of qualified midwives, especially in rural areas.

Nigeria continues to rank among nations with high maternal mortality ratios, with northern states disproportionately affected, according to data from the National Demographic and Health Survey and the Federal Ministry of Health.

In response, the Kebbi State Government has intensified investments in health infrastructure and manpower development since 2023, including the establishment of new health training institutions, recruitment of medical personnel and rehabilitation of primary healthcare centres.

One of the specialised institutions established to increase the training of qualified midwives, enhance access to maternal healthcare services, and support the state’s alignment with national and international maternal health targets, including the Sustainable Development Goals on maternal and child health, is the Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Science, Ambursa.
