The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has condemned the latest bomb blasts in Maiduguri, describing the incident as heinous, condemnable and unfortunate.
Speaker Abbas also commiserated with victims of the explosions that occurred on Monday night in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, where suspected terrorists targeted public locations.
The explosions reportedly occurred around the Monday Market and a security post at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
The bombs were said to have detonated simultaneously at about 7:02 p.m., killing and injuring an unspecified number of people.
Abbas said in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja that it was unfortunate suspected terrorists continued their violent activities against innocent Nigerians, noting that the attacks occurring during the ongoing Ramadan fasting period further showed that the perpetrators were not only enemies of Islam but also enemies of humanity.
The speaker called for collective efforts by government institutions, security agencies and citizens to end terrorism, banditry and other criminal activities across the country.
He also urged security forces to intensify operations against terrorists and other criminal elements threatening the peace and security of the nation.
Abbas condoled with the families of those who lost their lives in the blasts and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured victims.
The statement was signed by Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
