Mr Sani Lokoja, NEMA’s North-West Zonal Director, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria about the agency’s relief efforts in the zone on Friday in Kaduna.

Lokoja stated that the displaced people were victims of banditry, flooding, rainstorms, windstorms, fire outbreaks, and communal clashes in various parts of the zone.

He stated that the agency carried out a total of 87 relief interventions during the fiscal year under review, assisting affected individuals in various communities.

According to him, Kaduna State had the most interventions (34), followed by Sokoto (33) and Kano (20).

According to Lokoja, Kebbi recorded 16 interventions, Katsina 14, Jigawa 7, and Zamfara 6.

He explained that banditry continues to be a major cause of displacement in Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and parts of Kebbi states.

According to him, flooding and windstorms accounted for the majority of the interventions in Kano State and Jigawa, while fire outbreaks affected both urban and rural communities throughout the region.

The zonal director stated that NEMA had provided relief materials and emergency assistance to displaced and affected people in accordance with its mandate.

Lokoja added that the agency collaborated with state and local governments, as well as other relevant stakeholders, to help stabilise affected communities.

He emphasised the importance of increased preparedness and coordination in dealing with the Northwest’s rising security and climate risks.
