Nine senators officially defected from their respective parties to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Thursday, sparking a new wave of political realignment in Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber.
During proceedings at the Nigerian Senate chamber of the National Assembly of Nigeria, the lawmakers, who had previously been members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), declared their defection.
The lawmakers’ relocation to the ADC was justified by political alignment and strategic considerations, making it one of the most significant changes in the Senate’s composition in recent months.
The following senators declared their intention to defect: Senator Ireti Kingibe represented the Federal Capital Territory; Senator Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, Nasarawa South; Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Sokoto South; Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe, Adamawa South; Senator Austin Akobundu, Abia Central; Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Abia South; and Senator Victor Umeh, from LP to ADC. Anambra Central: Senator Tony Nwoye; Anambra North: Senator Lawal Adamu Usman; Kaduna Central: ADC to PDP
It is anticipated that the defections will increase the African Democratic Congress’s representation in the National Assembly, which could change political calculations in advance of upcoming legislative and electoral elections.
The action, according to political analysts, also reflects ongoing realignments among opposition figures looking for new platforms in the midst of internal conflicts within their former parties.
The change highlights the erratic nature of party loyalty in Nigeria’s political environment, even though specifics regarding the defection’s immediate ramifications are still being worked out.
