Barely three and a half years after its establishment, Northwest University, Sokoto, has recorded significant academic and institutional growth, positioning itself as one of the fast-rising universities in Nigeria, the vice chancellor, Professor Mukhtar Umar Bunza, has said.
Professor Bunza stated this on Friday while addressing journalists in Sokoto, where he highlighted the university’s rapid progress in academic programmes, accreditation processes, infrastructure development, and research capacity.
He attributed much of the institution’s recent advancement to the Federal Government’s support, particularly the approval granted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Education for Northwest University Sokoto to benefit from Federal Government intervention programmes.
According to him, the intervention has strengthened the university’s physical infrastructure, enhanced academic delivery, and improved the overall learning environment.
“This university is barely three and a half years old, yet the level of development we have achieved within this short period is remarkable,” Professor Bunza said.
He disclosed that within the last two months, no fewer than 13 accreditation teams from the National Universities Commission (NUC) visited the university to assess its academic programmes, staffing strength, facilities, and compliance with regulatory standards.
The Vice Chancellor also revealed that the university was hosting an accreditation team from the Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN), led by Professor Ambassador Jaafar Wasi, for the professional assessment of its Library and Information Science programme.
Professor Bunza explained that beyond NUC accreditation, all academic programmes are required to undergo assessment by their respective professional and regulatory bodies to ensure quality assurance and adherence to national standards.
“The LRCN team is here to assess our level of compliance with the rules and regulations guiding the Library and Information Science degree programme. They have engaged extensively with our academic staff and facilities,” he said.
Expressing satisfaction with the assessment process so far, the vice chancellor commended the leadership of the council and appreciated stakeholders for their continued support for higher education development in Sokoto State and the Northwest region.
Providing further insight into the university’s academic structure, Professor Bunza said Northwest University, Sokoto, currently operates five faculties offering a total of 17 academic programmes.
He noted that 13 of the programmes are mature and have qualified for accreditation, while the remaining programs under the College of Health Sciences are less than two years old and are expected to receive accreditation teams by next year.
According to him, the Library and Information Science programme is among the 13 courses currently undergoing accreditation.
Professor Bunza reaffirmed the commitment of the university’s management to sustaining high academic standards, strict regulatory compliance, and continuous institutional development as the institution works towards global competitiveness.
