Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi visited Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Thursday at the Government House, Bauchi, urging collaboration for a united Nigeria and increased agricultural investment in the North.
Obi said his visit was an “olive branch” to build consensus across party lines, stressing that insecurity and economic hardship affect all Nigerians regardless of politics, religion, or ethnicity.
“Nobody goes to the market and buys bread cheaper because of their party or tribe. When kidnappers strike, they don’t ask for your political affiliation before demanding ransom. We must come together for the unity and security of Nigeria,” Obi stated.
Mr. Obi argued that agriculture holds greater potential than oil for national revenue, with the North’s vast uncultivated land as a key asset.
“The North can drive this country. We want to invest in the North. We want a Nigeria where farmers are secure and can return to their farms. We can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil.” He said.
In response, Governor Mohammed welcomed the visit, describing Obi as a recurring visitor who has supported health and education institutions in the state.
“He came with a torchlight for unity, rebuilding the country, building bridges and creating a new tomorrow,” Mohammed said. “We are honoured that he singled us out for this visit.”
Mohammed said the discussion centred on partnership and synergy to recreate the balance of power envisioned by Nigeria’s founding leaders.
“What they are here for is not to ask us for anything other than cooperation to rebuild the country. We have given him our assurances and respect.” He added.
Obi was accompanied by a delegation of political leaders from the Southeast.
