The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially set March 28 and 29, 2026, for its National Convention in Abuja, as the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) concluded its 105th meeting on Monday.
Addressing journalists at the FCT Minister’s official residence in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, said the decision underscores the party’s commitment to a smooth transition to an elected leadership.
In preparation for the convention, NEC approved a nationwide schedule for party congresses. Ward and local government congresses are slated for February, while state congresses will take place in March.
Mohammed said the National Caretaker Committee will collaborate with the National Organising Secretary to issue detailed guidelines, notices, and modalities for the conduct of the congresses in strict compliance with the PDP Constitution, INEC Regulations, and judicial directives.
At the convention itself, NEC formally confirmed that it will be held on March 28 and 29, 2026, in Abuja, explaining that the event will elect members of the National Working Committee and other statutory organs of the party, setting the stage for an orderly transition to an elected leadership.
He recalled that the tenure of the National Caretaker Working Committee and affected State and Zonal Caretaker Committees was extended pending the conduct of the convention and congresses.
NEC mandated the Caretaker Committee to immediately activate Convention Sub-Committees and commence full logistical, administrative, and consultative preparations to ensure a transparent, inclusive, and credible Convention.
NEC also called on all PDP members to maintain unity, discipline, and loyalty, warning against actions that could undermine party cohesion, and urged members to place “the collective interest of the party above personal considerations.
“NEC reiterated that the National Caretaker Committee remains the only lawful national administrative organ of the Party, fully empowered to act as the National Working Committee (NWC) pending the conduct of the National Convention.
“Pursuant to its constitutional responsibilities and in line with preparations for a smooth transition to an elected leadership, NEC approved and confirmed the following schedule for Party Congresses nationwide: Ward Congresses: February. Local Government Congresses: February. State Congresses: March.
“NEC directed the National Caretaker Committee, in collaboration with the National Organising Secretary and relevant organs of the Party, to issue detailed guidelines, notices, and modalities for the conduct of the congresses in strict compliance with the PDP Constitution, INEC Regulations, and judicial directives.
“NEC further approved and confirmed March 28th and 29th, 2026, as the date for the PDP National Convention, to be held at Abuja, for the purpose of electing members of the National Working Committee and other statutory organs of the Party.
“NEC affirmed the extension of the tenure of the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) and other affected Caretaker Committees of the State and Zonal Chapters pending the conduct of the National Convention and State and Zonal Congresses, respectively.
“NEC mandated the National Caretaker Committee to immediately activate Convention Sub-Committees and commence full logistical, all administrative, and consultative preparations to ensure a transparent, inclusive, and credible Convention.” He said
Mohammed said the NEC “unanimously reconfirmed, ratified, and reaffirmed the full content, validity, force, and effect of all resolutions and decisions reached at the Emergency 104th NEC Meeting held on Sunday, 7th December 2025.”
He stressed that actions taken under the 104th NEC resolutions remain “binding, lawful, and operative.”
The committee reiterated its absolute belief in the independence of the judiciary and the sanctity of the rule of law.
“NEC welcomed and affirmed the judgement of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, which upheld the legality of the party’s leadership and administrative arrangements and directed INEC to recognise the duly constituted National Caretaker Committee of the PDP in line with the law.”
Mohammed added that all party organs, members, and stakeholders are expected to “act strictly in obedience to subsisting court judgements and judicial directives,” urging INEC and other relevant institutions to comply fully with the ruling in the interest of democracy and constitutional order.
The NEC also reaffirmed the legitimacy and authority of the Abdulrahman Muhammed-led National Caretaker Committee, with Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu serving as Secretary.
The committee remains “the only lawful national administrative organ of the Party, fully empowered to act as the National Working Committee pending the conduct of the National Convention.”
The committee reaffirmed its commitment to rebuilding the PDP as a “strong, disciplined, democratic, and electorally competitive party capable of providing credible leadership and governance to Nigerians.”
Expressing confidence in the decisions of the 105th NEC Meeting, Mohammed said the resolutions are expected to “strengthen internal democracy, restore stability, and reposition the Party for future electoral success.”
Furthermore, NEC appealed to all stakeholders, supporters, and members across the country and in the diaspora to remain “steadfast, law-abiding, and committed to the ideals of the Party,” signalling a new phase of preparation ahead of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle.
