SOKOTO:– Authorities in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State have firmly dismissed reports alleging that bandits attacked a mosque and killed worshippers including an Imam.
Council Chairman, Alhaji Ayuba Hashimu, described the claim as outright fabrication designed to spread fear and provoke unnecessary panic among residents.
“I don’t know any mosque that was attacked, not to talk of killing of an Imam and worshippers. The story is false,” he said on Sunday.
Similarly, Alhaji Aminu Boza, member representing Sabon Birni in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, faulted the circulating narrative, insisting that no mosque came under attack.
“I don’t know how they got their story, but it is not true. No mosque was attacked by bandits,” Boza emphasized.
Security sources however confirmed that troops of the Nigerian Army engaged armed bandits who attempted to infiltrate Gatawa village in the early hours of December 5, 2025, along the Dan-Kamarawa–Gatawa corridor.
The attackers were said to have exchanged sporadic gunfire with vigilante operatives before soldiers arrived, confronted them and successfully halted their advance.
Four vigilante members were injured in the clash and are receiving medical treatment.
“The quick response of troops averted what could have been a major attack. The situation is stable and under control,” a security source disclosed.
Officials have appealed to residents to disregard unverified reports and depend only on credible information as security remains tightened across the area.
