Taiwo Oyedele’s appointment as a minister-designate under President Bola Tinubu’s administration has been confirmed by the Senate.
Following the nominee’s approval by the Committee of the Whole through a voice vote, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the confirmation.
Oyedele is anticipated to take over as minister of state for finance in place of Mrs Doris Uzoka-Anite.
Following his screening by the legislators on Wednesday, the departing chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms was confirmed.
Before confirming the nominee as a minister-designate, senators questioned him for more than two hours.
In response to the lawmakers’ enquiries, Oyedele characterised his nomination as the minister of state for finance as an invitation to serve Nigeria.
The 50-year-old told senators, “My journey across the private sector, academia, and public policy has focused on fiscal governance and economic transformation. I have over 20 years of experience working with national governments, multilateral institutions, and global corporations.”
“However, this is a call to serve at a crucial time when Nigeria faces significant fiscal challenges and remarkable opportunities; it is not about personal accomplishments.”
“I am incredibly honoured to be in front of this esteemed assembly today. The public policy expert, accountant, and economist thanked the lawmakers, saying, “I thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the confidence reposed in me through this nomination, and I thank the Senate for the opportunity to share my vision.”
Oyedele oversaw the implementation of a new tax system in Nigeria while serving as the chair of the tax reforms committee before his appointment.
