Bauchi South Senator, Shehu Buba Umar has alleged a “sustained campaign” to tarnish his reputation ahead of the 2027 governorship election, as he declared his intention to contest on the platform of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP.
Addressing journalists in Bauchi on Monday, Senator Buba linked fresh allegations of banditry and terrorism financing to politics, saying they were designed to derail his ambition.
“My lawyers have drawn my attention to what we consider a sustained campaign to damage my reputation and political career in the build-up to that election,” he said.
“Politics must never become an excuse for destroying people’s reputations with allegations of terrorism and other grave crimes.”
The Senator, who previously chaired the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, said his past engagements with military and intelligence agencies were now being misrepresented.
To clear his name, he said he had submitted documents to relevant security agencies and requested a full investigation.
According to him, the documents include a 2025 petition to the police, details of a pending court case in Abuja, and a September 2026 request for Interpol intervention.
“My decision to submit myself for investigation is bigger than politics. It is about accountability and the principle that nobody should be above scrutiny,” Buba stated.
He urged politicians in Bauchi to focus on governance rather than personal attacks.
“Let us debate development. Let us debate education, healthcare, agriculture, security, jobs, infrastructure and the future of Bauchi State,” he said.
Senator Buba pledged full cooperation with security agencies and called on Nigerians to “let the facts speak for themselves.”
