Troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE successfully neutralised two armed gunmen during a high-stakes ambush operation on Tuesday night within the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The engagement took place at approximately 7:49 pm near Doruwa Babuje, following the receipt of credible intelligence regarding the movement of a criminal gang notorious for terrorising local residents through violent attacks, sexual assault, and armed robbery.
Upon sighting the marauders, the military personnel initiated a tactical strike that resulted in a fierce firefight, leading to the death of two criminals shot during the encounter, while several others took advantage of the darkness to flee into the surrounding bushes, prompting an immediate search of the area that yielded the recovery of a locally fabricated rifle, ammunition, and various edged weapons.
Confirming details of the operation to newsmen, the Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force, Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, in a statement signed on Wednesday, noted that the recovery included five rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, a jackknife, and a mobile phone left behind by the fleeing suspects.
He emphasised that troops remain firmly positioned within the Marit and Lajam villages to ensure the continued safety of the population as efforts to track the remaining gunmen intensify.
Oteh urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely information to the nearest security formation to aid in the ongoing mission to protect lives and property.
He reaffirmed that the task force remains committed to its mandate to maintain peace and eliminate criminal elements in the general area.
