The Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, Ebonyi State, Dr Donatus C. Ilang, has urged students sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to remain focused, believe in their abilities and resist all forms of internal and external distractions during the examination.
Dr Ilang gave the charge during a monitoring exercise across examination centres in the state. He was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Higher Education, Hon. Peter Nwogbaga.
Addressing candidates, the commissioner said teachers and school administrators had played their part in preparing students for the examination, stressing that it was now the responsibility of the candidates to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired over the years.
He encouraged the students to approach the examination with confidence, discipline and integrity, noting that success comes through hard work and adequate preparation.
Dr Ilang also cautioned examiners, principals and school authorities against any act capable of tarnishing the image of the state or compromising the credibility of the examination process. He urged them to strictly adhere to the guidelines and regulations established by the West African Examinations Council.
The commissioner further disclosed that all schools directed to observe the midterm break must comply, warning that any institution that disregards the directive would face appropriate sanctions.
He also warned against the collection of unauthorised levies from students and parents, stressing that the government would not tolerate any form of exploitation within the education sector.
According to him, parents with credible evidence of illegal charges should report such cases to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education for prompt investigation and necessary action.
Hon Nwogbaga commended students, teachers and school management for maintaining a conducive atmosphere and orderly conduct during the examination.
He reiterated the commitment of the state government to ensuring discipline, transparency and quality standards in the education sector, adding that task force teams and security personnel had been deployed to schools across the thirteen local government areas of the state to safeguard the integrity of the examination.
