Wike Designates Katampe as Judges’ Zone, Announces Security Plan

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has designated Katampe District in Abuja as a Judges’ Zone and unveiled a dedicated security framework to protect judicial officers, following the commissioning of 10 residential quarters for justices of the Federal High Court.

The announcement was made by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, at the commissioning ceremony, where he also represented the administration’s broader infrastructure push aimed at strengthening the justice system and improving judicial welfare.

According to him, the new Judges’ Zone in Katampe is not only about housing but also about ensuring security, stability, and a controlled environment for judicial officers who are central to the administration of justice.

The Minister explained that the area will be exclusively reserved for judges, adding that surrounding developments will be regulated to avoid encroachment and protect the privacy and safety of residents.

He further disclosed that a police station will be constructed within the zone as part of the security architecture designed to safeguard the judicial residential area.

Wike also announced plans for an industrial court complex and facilities for the Code of Conduct Tribunal within the same corridor, with completion targeted for January 2027 under the same construction standards.

“…this area will be named judges’ zone. But across every property around here, we don’t want any other person to stay within this facility.

“We’re also building a police station here to protect that area. So we think it’s not just about leaving their houses. Security is also important.” He said

Wike said the government is rolling out a series of similar projects across the judiciary, noting that 10 quarters had already been commissioned for the Court of Appeal, while additional housing projects for the FCT High Court, with 22 units, would be delivered in July.

“We planned on the construction of an industrial court and the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The Code of Conduct Tribunal will have theirs there, while the judges of the industrial court will have theirs over there. And that will be completed by January 2027 at the latest. That is assurance we are giving. The same standard.” Wike said

He also said he had been directly involved in monitoring the project execution, stressing that the administration expects strict adherence to timelines and quality standards in public infrastructure delivery.

He referenced ongoing infrastructure expansion in the district, noting that road projects already commissioned by the President have improved access to the area, which he said had been undeveloped for years despite being under previous ownership.

The FCT Minister reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to delivering durable public infrastructure, insisting that the new Judges’ Zone would be maintained to the same standard in the years ahead as part of efforts to institutionalise quality governance and support judicial independence.

Also speaking, FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud described the Judges’ Quarters as a significant investment in the administration of justice and the consolidation of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Mahmoud said the project demonstrates the federal government’s commitment to providing the judiciary with the infrastructure needed to operate with dignity, independence, and excellence.

She expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his visionary leadership and unwavering support for initiatives that strengthen key national institutions, noting that the provision of modern residential facilities for judges reflects the administration’s dedication to the rule of law.

The Minister of State also commended the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his relentless commitment to delivering transformative infrastructure across the nation’s capital.

She expressed optimism that the newly inaugurated judges’ quarters would provide a conducive living environment for judicial officers, strengthen the justice delivery system, and stand as enduring symbols of a government committed to institutional excellence and the rule of law.
