The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Zamfara State Coordinator, Mallam Muhammad Lawan Ahmed, has called for closer collaboration with Chairmen of Local Government Areas to improve the impact of corps members at the grassroots.
Mallam Ahmed made the call on Friday during a speech at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream I Corps Members at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, UBEC Training Centre, Gusau.
He said local government councils have important roles to play, as enshrined in the NYSC Act, in ensuring the welfare, security, and effective deployment of corps members posted to their councils.
According to the coordinator, the orientation course period provides a good opportunity for local government chairmen and their representatives to visit the camp and interact with corps members who may eventually serve in their areas.
He explained that such interaction would help Corps Members gain a better understanding of their host communities, available opportunities, and development needs.
He also expressed appreciation to the Zamfara State Government for its strong support of the NYSC Scheme, particularly the recent implementation of a 150 percent increase in state allowance to Corps Members and ongoing works to improve facilities at the orientation camp.
Earlier, the Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Hon. Tasiu Musa Shinkafi, while declaring the orientation course open, had reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare and safety of Corps Members.
He assured the corps members of a supportive environment throughout their service year.
“The Zamfara State Government remains fully committed to supporting the NYSC. We will continue to collaborate with the scheme to address challenges. Your safety, dignity, and productivity remain our priority.
“As you take the Oath of Allegiance today, I charge you to serve with integrity, discipline, and a sense of purpose. Let your service year be defined by professionalism, empathy, and national pride,” he said.
Justice Saad Gurbin Bore of the State High Court administered the oath of allegiance on over 500 corps members to formally induct them into the NYSC programme
