ADC faults Tinubu for retaining minister accused of certificate irregularities

ABUJA – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Tinubu for retaining the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Uche Nnaji, despite reports that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had distanced themselves from the certificates he presented for his ministerial appointment.

In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the government’s silence on the matter suggested tolerance for ‘questionable’ conduct within its ranks.

The party described the situation as ‘a disservice’ to the country, arguing that Nigeria has many competent citizens of proven integrity who could lead such a strategic ministry.

“Despite mounting public concern, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr Uche Nnaji, remains in office after questions were raised about the authenticity of the certificates he submitted,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC said the development was not an isolated case, alleging that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had recorded a number of controversies relating to academic claims among public officials.

“These recurring scandals are reflective of a party that appears unbothered by basic ethical considerations,” it added.

The party referred to media reports claiming that both UNN and the NYSC had formally clarified that the documents in question were not issued by them. It urged the government to investigate the matter to restore public confidence.

“If the Minister is not honourable enough to step aside, why is the Tinubu administration still keeping him in office? By refusing to act, the government risks undermining its credibility on transparency and accountability,” the ADC warned.

The party maintained that the credibility of governance begins with the integrity of those appointed to serve, insisting that Nigerians deserve leaders whose qualifications are beyond dispute.

It further noted that a ministry charged with advancing innovation and research should be led by persons whose professional records inspire confidence.

“Our country is blessed with competent and qualified minds in all fields of endeavour. Yet this government appears unwilling to uphold integrity as a key criterion for public service,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC called for the temporary suspension of Nnaji pending a transparent, independent investigation into the controversy, saying that accountability must guide the handling of the matter.

“Questions about public officers’ qualifications must be treated seriously. The longer the Tinubu government delays action, the clearer it becomes that integrity and accountability are not being prioritised,” the ADC added

The party also urged the Senate and the Department of State Services (DSS) to review their screening and vetting procedures for nominees to high office to prevent similar controversies in future.

“A Senate that aligns itself completely with the will of the President risks failing in its constitutional duty to Nigerians,” the ADC warned.
