Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has, on Wednesday, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of six modern markets at the Atiku Abubakar bypass road in Bauchi.
The governor, while speaking, mentioned the project to include New Wunti Market, New Furniture Market, New Vegetable Market, New Fanteka Market, and New Grains and Herbal Markets.
Bala Mohammed also declared Bauchi state a fast-emerging economic hub in Northern Nigeria, pointing out that the markets
are designed to address rapid population growth, commercial traffic, and outdated infrastructure.
Governor Mohammed emphasised that the project aligns with his administration’s economic goals, stimulating macro- and microeconomic activities through capital projects.
He said that the project is a strategic response to rapid population growth, increased commercial traffic, and the overstretching of decades-old market infrastructure.
Earlier on, the state Commissioner of the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, Muhammad Sadiq Hamisu Shira, described the markets as “smart governance and sustainable development” under a PPP framework.
The commissioner described markets as “the heartbeat of the local economy”, stating that the new markets would provide planned shop spaces, improved sanitation, a reliable power and water supply, parking areas, and an enhanced security post.
Also speaking, the managing director of the Bauchi Markets and Terminal Management Company Limited, Alhaji Muhammad Kabir Sizwe, assured the government of professionalism, transparency, and timely project completion.
