The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and his deputy, Benjamin Kalu, have called on Nigerians to embrace the virtues of sacrifice, unity, and hope as Christians across the country celebrate Easter.
In separate Easter messages Saturday in Abuja, both leaders urged citizens to reflect on the significance of the season and commit to prayers for the peace, stability, and progress of Nigeria.
Speaker Abbas congratulated Christians on the successful completion of the Lenten season, describing Easter as a period that marks the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, whom he referred to as a perfect role model for humanity.
He urged Christians to emulate the teachings of Christ, emphasising values such as sacrifice, selflessness, obedience, and love, which he said are essential for national cohesion and development.
The Speaker also called on Nigerians to sustain prayers for the country and the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that divine intervention remains crucial in addressing the nation’s socio-economic and political challenges.
According to Abbas, prayers have continued to play a vital role in preserving Nigeria’s unity amid pressures that have destabilised other nations.
He further stressed the need for mutual respect among citizens, regardless of religious or ethnic differences, describing the overlap of Ramadan and Lent in 2026 as a “divine arrangement” to strengthen unity between Muslims and Christians.
Similarly, Deputy Speaker Kalu urged Nigerians to embrace hope, unity, and a shared sense of humanity, describing Easter as a powerful reminder of sacrifice, renewal, and the triumph of hope over despair.
“Easter speaks to the resilience of the human spirit and the boundless power of hope. It calls on us to love one another, stand united, and uphold our shared humanity, especially in difficult times,” Kalu said.
He also urged leaders at all levels to prioritise inclusive policies that promote fairness, compassion, and the welfare of citizens, stressing that true leadership must be rooted in service while encouraging Nigerians to extend kindness to the less privileged and vulnerable.
Kalu reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to legislative efforts aimed at strengthening national unity, boosting economic growth and improving the overall well-being of Nigerians.
Voth leaders wished Christians a peaceful and fulfilling Easter celebration.
