The Federal Government has approved the development and construction of the proposed King Amachree Airport at Elem Ifoko, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The approval is contained in a letter dated October 26, 2026, with reference number FMA/ADD/402/S.101/C.1/1/88 and addressed to the Executive Director of Royal Fouche Services Limited, Prince Tonye Princewill.
The letter stated that the approval was subject to the fulfilment of specified requirements.
Signed by the Director of the Aerodrome Development Department on behalf of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, the letter said the proponents must prepare and submit a comprehensive airport master plan detailing the proposed development, construction phases, facilities and associated infrastructure.
It also required compliance with all applicable regulations of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), environmental laws and standards, including an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and other relevant environmental studies. The proponents are also required to pay all applicable statutory fees.
Other conditions include the submission of a detailed topographical and obstacle survey referenced to the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS-84), as well as a comprehensive geotechnical investigation to assess the site’s subsurface conditions, soil-bearing capacity, groundwater characteristics and suitability for the proposed airport infrastructure.
The government also required detailed hydrological, hydraulic and drainage studies to assess flooding risks, tidal influences, seasonal water movements and stormwater management at the proposed airport site.
The proponents must further submit an engineering assessment of the canal traversing the site to determine the most suitable solution, including diversion or realignment of the canal or the construction of an appropriate bridge or other crossing structure.
The conditions also require the development of reliable, all-weather road access to the proposed airport to support construction, airport operations, emergency response, and passenger and cargo movement.
In addition, the proponents are to provide a formal wind rose analysis and a detailed meteorological assessment in consultation with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
The letter further directed that the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and its relevant agencies be involved throughout all stages of the airport’s development to provide technical oversight and ensure compliance with applicable International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs) and other statutory and regulatory requirements.
