Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo on Wednesday inaugurated the State All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign council with a charge to take its message to the grassroots ahead on 2027 general elections.
The governor, who performed the function in Benin, charged the council and the stakeholders to reach every pooling unit, wards across all the local government areas of the state.
He urged members to work together as a team, engage directly with people at the grassroots and ensure that the party’s campaign reached every community in the state.
He charged them to promote peaceful campaigns and avoid actions or statements capable of causing division within the party or the state.
Okpebholo said the campaign should involve youths, women, traditional institutions, traders and other relevant stakeholders, rather than being restricted to party leaders and political office holders.
He urged them to explain the programmes and achievements of the APC-led administration to the people, listen to their concerns and effectively mobilise support at the grassroots.
Earlier, Sen. Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, commended Okpebholo for his grassroots approach to governance and urged the council to reach out beyond existing APC members.
Oshiomhole said people who were not members of the party were also residents of Edo and should be engaged in the campaign.
Also speaking, Jarrett Tenebe, Edo APC Chairman, said the council comprised experienced party members carefully selected to deliver the party’s candidates in the various elections.
Tenebe urged members to work collectively and ensure that campaign activities reached all wards and polling units, adding that the party would provide the necessary logistics support.
On his part, Sen. Matthew Urhoghide, Director-General, Campaign Council, said the campaign must be taken to the “nooks and crannies” of Edo while urging members to engage residents beyond the APC membership.
Urhoghide said the election would be fought at the polling-unit level and urged every member of the council to pay attention to grassroots mobilisation.
A former deputy governor of Edo, Dr Pius Odubu, described the council members’ appointment as a call to duty and urged them to engage people across the state.
