INEC Seeks Monarchs’ Partnership on Peaceful guber poll

In order to maintain peace in the state prior to, during, and following the June 20 Ekiti governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission has enlisted the assistance of traditional institutions in Ekiti State. The Independent National Electoral Commission has enlisted the support of the traditional institution in Ekiti State to ensure peace in the state before, during and after the June 20 Ekiti governorship election.

Dr. Bunmi Omoseyin, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti State, stated that the electoral body’s Continuous Voter Registration exercise would be transferred to the wards starting on Monday. She also asked the monarchs for assistance in order to guarantee that eligible members of their communities take part.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting with the traditional rulers in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, the REC stated that the traditional institution had a significant role to play in promoting peace and unity because their voices were heard in their communities and state.

According to Omoseyindemi, the state’s democratic governance has continued to be strengthened by stakeholders’ dedication to peace and unity.

“INEC has started early and thorough planning to promote informed participation and ensure the Ekiti election is free, fair, credible, and inclusive, conducted in a peaceful and conducive environment, well secured, and in line with the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022 as amended,” he stated. The “

The commission had “meetings with the political parties, and we have been able to give them the guidelines on participation and the code of conduct during the campaign” as part of the preparations, according to the REC. In order to live up to the expectations of the people of Ekiti, we are totally dedicated to improving our process and learning from the past.

“The success of elections in our state is a shared responsibility,” he declared. Before, during, and after elections, we rely on your unwavering support to advance peace, deter violence, demand adherence to electoral laws, and promote unity.

“Your guardians, as fathers of the land, will play a crucial role in ensuring that Ekiti continues to be a model of peaceful and legitimate elections in Nigeria.”

The REC stated, “Your voices carry weight, and your endorsement will significantly enhance public confidence and turnout,” while also urging the monarchs to support the ongoing CVR.

“The CVR exercise is intended to ensure that all eligible citizens who have reached the age of 18, as well as those who were previously unable to register, have the opportunity to be included in the national register of voters,” he stated.

Additionally, CVR gives registered voters the ability to move their registration from one place to another, fix mistakes in their personal information, and replace permanent voter cards—also known as PVCs—that are lost or damaged. The “

According to the REC, the Commission has finalised plans to transfer the CVR exercise to the ward level starting on Monday, February 2, “in a deliberate effort to deepen inclusion, enhance accessibility,
and lessen the difficulties that potential registrants encounter.

Registration centres will be closer to people thanks to this initiative, especially those who live in remote and difficult-to-reach communities. The REC stated, “We hope to remove distance barriers, lessen crowding, and promote increased participation of eligible citizens in the electoral process by bringing the CVR to the ward level.”

Oba Adejimi Adu-Alagbado, the chairman of the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Ogoga of Ikere Ekiti, promised that the state’s monarchs would continue to play the roles they had been playing in guaranteeing the state’s peaceful elections.

“We have not had any problems in Ekiti thus far, and we are going to make sure we sustain that,” stated Oba Adu-Alagbado. The state’s royal fathers are all involved. Like previous elections, this one will be peaceful. We guarantee our assistance. The “

According to the chairman of the traditional council, the state’s monarchs will keep engaging in group or collective dialogue with their communities in order to promote peace. And tranquillity will prevail. The “

Remember that the names of 12 parties, their candidates, and their deputies who were scheduled to run in the June 20 Ekiti governorship election were released by INEC on January 19.

In accordance with the Electoral Act 2022 and its schedule for the Ekiti election, the electoral umpire also declared that public campaigns would begin on January 21.

In order to win the election, the REC asked for everyone’s cooperation at a stakeholders’ meeting that included political parties, civil society organisations, INEC employees, and the media.
