According to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), several suicide bomb explosions occurred in the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) on Monday, March 16, 2026, around 7:05 p.m.
Suspected Boko Haram terrorists carried out the explosions, detonating improvised explosive devices at three different locations in the city: the Post Office area, the Monday Market axis, and the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) during Iftar (the breaking of the fast).
Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, stated on Tuesday in Maiduguri that these cowardly attacks targeted crowded public areas in an attempt to inflict mass casualties and cause panic in the city.
Troops from Operation HADIN KAI, working with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and other security agencies, responded quickly to the incident, securing and cordoning off the affected areas to prevent further damage.
Emergency response teams, including members of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other medical service providers, quickly transported casualties to the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for immediate medical care.
Medical teams are currently treating injured victims at various health facilities throughout the city, while emergency responders continue rescue and evacuation efforts in the affected areas.
Preliminary information suggests that the terrorists may have sent multiple suicide bombers into Maiduguri with the intention of carrying out coordinated attacks at congested areas.
As a result, security forces across the metropolis have increased surveillance, patrols, and counter-IED measures in an effort to locate any remaining suspects and prevent further attacks.
Please stay calm and vigilant. Avoid crowded areas whenever possible, and notify the nearest security agency of any suspicious individuals, unattended items, or unusual activities.
