The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested three suspects in Darazo and Yana for alleged possession of counterfeit US dollars and defrauding a Lagos resident of N4.44 million in a fake dollar exchange.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, disclosed this on Thursday at a press briefing held at the Command Headquarters, Yandoka Road, Bauchi.
He was represented by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib.
SP Habib said operatives attached to Darazo Division acted on credible intelligence that some persons planned to exchange fake dollars for naira in the Nahutan Darazo area.
“On September 22, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., operatives tactically arrested one Adamu Umar, 25, of Jigawa State, while two accomplices escaped,” he said.
Exhibits recovered from the suspect, according to him, include 67 pieces of counterfeit US dollars, one machete and one Tecno keypad phone.
Habib added that the suspect attacked and injured a police officer with the machete and later attempted to escape while being conveyed to the Division on a motorcycle, resulting in injuries to himself and two officers.
He said the injured were treated and discharged at the General Hospital, Darazo.
In a related case, the PPRO said operatives of Yana Division arrested two suspects for criminal conspiracy, cheating and possession of counterfeit currency.
He said a 42-year-old resident of Agege, Lagos State, reported that Tanimu Garba, 42, and Habibu Ahmed, 38, both of Yana town, Shira Local Government Area, in conspiracy with three others from Gidan Waya, Kwanar Huguma in Kano State, lured him from Lagos to Yana for a dollar exchange.
“He transferred N4,449,000 to an account provided by them, after which they assaulted him with sticks, gave him suspected counterfeit 100-dollar notes and fled into the bush,” Habib stated.
He said the two principal suspects were arrested and 96 pieces of suspected counterfeit 100 US dollar notes were recovered, while a manhunt for the fleeing accomplices has been intensified.
The Commissioner commended operatives for their professionalism and condemned the circulation of fake currencies.
He warned the public against illegal possession of firearms and fraudulent foreign exchange transactions and urged residents to remain law-abiding and provide timely and credible information to the police.
