Reps Demand Accountability, Holistic Security Strategy at 2026 Defence Budget Session

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Benson, has called for greater accountability, transparency and adoption of both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies in tackling Nigeria’s security challenges.

Benson made the request on Tuesday at the start of the 2026 budget defence meeting with the committee’s agencies in Abuja. Benson made the call during the commencement of the 2026 budget defence session with agencies under the committee’s jurisdiction in Abuja on Tuesday

In order to ensure accountability and efficient use of public funds in the defence sector, he defined the budget defence exercise as a constitutional duty.

He claims that the meeting offers a chance for lawmakers and defence organisations to engage constructively in the interest of national security.

The lawmaker noted that the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces and other security agencies have greatly aided in maintaining national stability and praised their efforts in fighting terrorism, insurgency, and other criminal activities throughout the nation.

Notwithstanding the advancements made, Benson emphasised that more extensive institutional changes, better coordination, and the effective use of the resources at hand are necessary to address the ongoing security threats.
