The controversy surrounding the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senatorial primary election in Plateau North has intensified, with stakeholders raising serious concerns over the lack of a transparent democratic process.
Party faithful and pro-democracy advocates have expressed deep troubling sentiments regarding the denial of a free and fair opportunity for members to elect their preferred candidate.
In a strong rebuke of the process, critics have warned that the imposition of outcomes against the popular will of party members severely weakens confidence in democratic institutions.
They argue that bypassing internal party democracy, fairness, and due process risks alienating loyal stakeholders who have laboured tirelessly for the growth and stability of the ruling party.
Speaking in a statement, the Director General of the I. D. Gyang Campaign Council, Comrade Lot Adas, asserted that the foundational sanctity of the people’s mandate must be protected.
Adas emphasised that political leadership should remain legitimate within party politics rather than being used to subvert the will of the grassroots.
According to the statement, it is public knowledge that the senatorial primary elections were never actually conducted in Plateau North.
Instead, the campaign council alleged that results were simply concocted and allocated to suit a predetermined outcome.
The campaign council reminded party leadership that the ultimate strength of the APC has always been its grassroots members, whose voices and votes must never be substituted by predetermined arrangements.
Adas noted, however, that the national chairman of the APC has since clarified that the National Working Committee (NWC) is actively studying the reports of the Appeal Committee regarding the conduct of the National Assembly primary elections.
However, with the assurance from party leadership that the right thing will ultimately be done, the I. D. Gyang Campaign Council has urged its supporters and party faithful to remain vigilant and peaceful.
