Tinubu described the achievement as “bronze that feels like gold,” praising the team’s tenacity and fighting spirit.
“This bronze medal feels as good as gold. “Thank you to our brave Super Eagles and national team players,” the President said.
Mr Bayo Onanuga, Presidential Spokesperson, issued this statement in Abuja on Saturday.
The Super Eagles defeated Egypt, the seven-time AFCON champions, on penalties after regulation time ended in a draw.
Tinubu praised the team for overcoming the disappointment of their semi-final loss to host Morocco on Wednesday.
He praised the players’ determination, persistence, and the can-do spirit for which Nigeria is known.
“Despite their strong performance in the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco in a penalty shootout last Wednesday, dashing our people’s hopes of winning the championship.
“However, our players remained undeterred, and, demonstrating the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off,” Tinubu stated.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nigeria has won its ninth AFCON bronze medal.
Nigeria has won the AFCON title three times, finished second four times, and finished third on nine occasions.
Tinubu said Nigerians will be proud when the team receives their bronze medals on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.
“We will all be proud of them when they receive their well-deserved bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco,” he said.
