The United States has announced new measures to curb violence against Christians and other religious groups in Nigeria and beyond.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, Under a policy framed in Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, the US State Department can now restrict visas for individuals involved in violations of religious freedom, including their immediate family members where applicable.
President Donald Trump emphasized that “the United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other countries.”
The policy targets those who have directed, authorized, supported, participated in, or carried out acts of religious persecution.
It will apply not only to Nigeria but also to other governments or individuals found responsible for such violations.
The move comes amid growing international concern over attacks by radical Islamic terrorists, Fulani militias, and other violent actors in Nigeria, particularly targeting Christian communities.
US authorities said the policy aims to hold perpetrators accountable and deter future violations of religious freedom.
