A fresh COVID-19 case involving a 53-year-old Chinese national, who works in the Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, was reported by the state’s Health Commissioner in Calabar yesterday.
Commissioner Dr Henry Ayuk stated that the individual, who is employed by Lafarge, arrived in Nigeria on March 17. After falling ill, he was initially admitted to his company’s medical facility. However, his condition worsened, prompting a referral to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where samples were taken and confirmed to show symptoms consistent with COVID-19.
Dr Ayuk assured the public that the patient is recovering and emphasised that the state Ministry of Health is prepared to handle and manage any disease or epidemic outbreak. He stated that there is no cause for alarm, as the ministry is capable of containing any potential outbreak.
Additionally, the state’s Epidemiologist, Dr. Inyang Ekpenyong, revealed that the state’s emergency response unit has been activated and is currently engaged in contact tracing and listing individuals who may have come into contact with the patient.
