Gov. Mutfwang Enhances Security in Plateau with 1,450 Local Combatants

The Governor of Plateau State, Barr Caleb Mutfwang, has urged the newly commissioned 1,450 local combatants, known as Operation Rainbow—a state-owned security initiative—to take action against insurgents terrorizing communities.

Governor Mutfwang highlighted that terrorists often conceal themselves within communities to commit heinous crimes. Therefore, it is essential to strengthen community-based security in support of conventional security agencies.

He spoke at the passing-out ceremony for Operation Rainbow in Jos on Tuesday, during which the 1,450 operatives were officially commissioned.

Mutfwang stated, “We are well aware that effective security starts from within our communities. As such, our administration has prioritized community-based security initiatives, including enhancing the support structures of vigilante groups, as critical partners in our broader security framework. Your training has gone beyond physical drills and tactical preparedness; it has instilled discipline, respect for the rule of law, adherence to human rights, and principles of responsible engagement with civilians.”

He reminded the operatives of the vital role security plays in nation-building and urged them to prioritize their responsibilities as security personnel over personal ambitions.

“As you take your oath of service and step into the field, let me remind you that security is the foundation upon which sustainable development is built. Without peace, there can be no meaningful progress, investment, prosperity, or lasting unity. This is why peace and security are fundamental priorities for my administration.”

The governor continued, “As you are deployed, I urge you to conduct yourselves with the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and restraint. You are not above the law; rather, you are its guardians and partners. Work collaboratively with conventional security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders. Effective intelligence gathering, cooperation, and mutual respect remain essential tools in our pursuit of lasting peace.”

Mutfwang clarified, “It is important to note that Operation Rainbow was created primarily to protect all citizens, regardless of their faith, ethnic background, or region. It is not intended to target anyone; instead, it is an inclusive security outfit that safeguards individuals of all beliefs and backgrounds, working together to promote peace, unity, and safety for everyone.”

He concluded, “This government is committed to your welfare. We will continue to provide the necessary logistics, ongoing training, and improved welfare packages to enable you to perform your duties effectively and confidently. As you graduate today, remember that the uniform you wear symbolizes hope, safety, trust, and responsibility. Be worthy ambassadors of your communities and shining role models for our youth. Let your actions inspire confidence, unity, and peace throughout Plateau State.”
