The Head of Communications and Strategies of the African Climate Reporters, Comrade Ibrahima Yakubu, has visited Kangimi Dam in Kaduna State to evaluate its current condition and raise awareness about flood prevention to neighbouring communities.
The visit became comparative as the rainy season begins in the state, amid growing concerns over climate change and environmental degradation, which continue to increase the risk of flooding and related disasters.
During the inspection, Yakubu called on communities living behind the dam and others along waterways to immediately stop dumping refuse, especially pure water sachets, dirt, and garbage, into drainage channels, warning of the consequences of such practices, which contribute to the blockage of waterways and heighten the chances of flooding.
He stressed the urgent need for residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer locations to prevent the loss of life and property, in a statement he signed and shared with newsmen on Wednesday.
Yakubu also revealed that his team plans to visit eight vulnerable communities surrounding the dam to educate residents on early warning signs and effective response strategies to minimise the impact of potential flooding.
He urged people living near streams and waterways to remain alert and take precautionary measures as the rainy season intensifies.
While commending the efforts of humanitarian organisations, including NEMA, the Red Cross, and other disaster management agencies, Yakubu acknowledged their continued commitment to timely emergency response and the protection of lives and property.
RoadHe commended the Kaduna State government’s efforts towards dredging Kigo’s new extension roads while advising to extend the activities to Tudun Wada near the Bashama road graveyard.
