BENIN CITY – FIVE out of nine political parties that would participate in Saturday’s Senatorial and House of Representatives by-elections were around to sign a peace accord supervised by security agencies led by the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbanika.
The political parties were the All Progressives Congress (APC), African Democratic Party (ADP), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Action Alliance (AA) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Also present were heads of various sister security agencies, including the NDLEA, DSS, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Nigerian Correctional Service.
Agbonika, reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting the electoral process and issued a strong warning against any attempts to disrupt the peace.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, Professor Anugbum Onuaha, who also signed the peace pact, confirmed that all electoral materials have been dispatched and are in place for a smooth polling exercise on the 16th of August,2025.
The chairman of the peace committee, Iyase Of Benin, Chief Sam Igbe was represented by Chief Jackson Igbinovia, who urged all stakeholders and voters to conduct themselves peacefully during the polls.
Meanwhile the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has distributed sensitive materials to local government areas where by-elections are expected to hold on Saturday.
Political parties and civil society representatives were present at the Benin branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria from where the sensitive materials were distributed.
Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Anugbum Onuoha, who spoke to journalists said “It was important to invite political parties who indicated interest to contest in the by-election.”
Prof. Onuoha said the political parties expressed satisfaction with the processes.
“The exercise, so far, has been seamless and we are good to go. The sensitive materials will move from here to the seven local government areas”.
He said adequate security has been provided to score the sensitive materials to their destination.
